Here we enter the unusual Fighting Fantasy; Freeway Fighter. This is the twenty third book in the successful Fighting Fantasy gamebook series, this time written entirely by Ian Livingstone. It is a wholly unique adventure that is set in futuristic earth.

Book Description: Fighting Life is lawless and dangerous. Survivors like you either live in scattered, fortified towns or roam outside as bandits. YOUR mission is to cross the wilderness to the far-distant oil-refinery at San Anglo and bring vital supplies back to the peaceful town of New Hope. Even in the armed Dodge Interceptor you are given, the journey will be wild and perilous. Will YOU survive?

A Fighting Fantasy Adventure Gamebooks in which YOU are the hero!

This adventure is unusual as it is set on Earth; one of only two books in the series to be based on Earth. On 21 July 2022, a rogue killer virus wiped out 85% of the world's population inside four days. You are one of the few survivors and still fight for the cause of good despite the anarchy that has broken out since the catastrophe. As one of the good guys, you are residing in the fortress of New Hope, trying to bring about a resurrection in the good of the people.

You are working on the design of an early-warning system when you are given the mission. The town of San Anglo is offering 10,000 litres of oil for some food & grain stocks, of which you have a surplus. The opportunity is too good to turn down and it is you that they want to send on the perilous mission across barren terrain. Naturally, you accept and are given a Dodge Interceptor to perform the journey in.

The Interceptor is a vicious car, heavily armed and incredibly fast. It is going to be tough in the battles you will no doubt face against the bandits on the roads, and is the one chance you'll have of getting from A to B. The car is fitted with machine guns, a rocket launcher and ram bars amongst other things. You also have rear oil sprays and tyre-shredding spikes to help you deal with your enemies.

During your journey there will also be ample opportunity for you to make improvements to your car. You may also need to replace wheels along the way if these get flat. By far the most important thing to do on your journey though is find out where the fuel canisters are. At regular intervals you will run out of fuel unless you can find a replacement canister.

On the road, you'll come across various forms of futuristic road rage, and need to fight your way through all the thrills and spills of a barren planet Earth. There are some shady characters that you'll need to deal with before you can accomplish your goal, and numerous encounters wanting a race or fight on the roads.
